Announcement: Monsters, Makeup & Effects: Volume 3 Coming This December
Hi Everyone!
I'm pretty good at talking up other folks' work, but I'm pretty awful when it comes to talking about my own, so I'm going to try my best to just take a moment here and talk about something that has been a long time coming in my little world.

This week, it was announced that Monsters, Makeup & Effects: Volume 3 is going to be released in December. I've now been working on this series of interviews with all these amazing special effects legends for over a decade now, so getting to celebrate this latest collection of interviews is a true honor for me...but it's also overwhelming, too. I won't lie – I'm beyond exhausted these days, between my day job that keeps me beyond busy during the week, and then my weekends consist of me spending nearly every waking moment writing and/or coordinating home media projects, so taking any time to enjoy anything just isn't a thing that I really do.
And I'm sort of lacking in words today as I write this, so I apologize this post isn't more eloquent. I think I save my better words for other stuff, I guess.
In any case, for Monsters, Makeup & Effects: Volume 3, I'm pretty much on my own when it comes to promotion. I'm so grateful to my Daily Dead family for sharing the news this past week, but the announcement hasn't proved to be newsworthy among the other horror sites, which I get because October is such a busy month. So, I am definitely just doing whatever I can to spread the word about this book, just so, if nothing else, I can do right by all of these amazing artists involved because their stories deserve to be shared with the fans.
So anyway, if anyone is interested in picking up a copy of Monsters, Makeup & Effects: Volume 3, you can pre-order your copy here:
Also, I haven't talked about this much either, but recently I contributed a number of interviews and retrospectives to Pulse Books' Herbert West Re-Animator book, which celebrates the Re-Animator franchise. You can order a copy of that HERE.

And here are all the details on Monsters, Makeup & Effects: Volume 3 from the press release:
Hollywood’s greatest makeup and effects artists have dedicated their lives to bringing our wildest nightmares, fantastical creatures, unforgettable characters, and cinematic worlds to life, and now their stories continue in Monsters, Makeup & Effects: Conversations with Cinema’s Greatest Artists: Volume 3. Written by journalist and horror historian Heather Wixson, the latest volume in her acclaimed series once again goes behind the scenes with the legendary artists whose artistry and ingenuity helped define some of the most memorable films in genre history. Monsters, Makeup & Effects: Volume 3 is now available for pre-order from Dark Ink, with the official release set for December 1st.
“Once again, Heather has hit it out of the park with another amazing volume that takes readers behind the scenes and into the minds of the industry’s greatest artists,” said Michael Aloisi, owner of Dark Ink.
“Working on these interviews for the Monsters, Makeup & Effects series has been a ten-year journey in my career, so seeing Volume 3 come to life is an incredibly meaningful milestone for me, both personally and professionally. I’m so proud of the histories I’ve been able to feature across these books, and I’m even more grateful to these incredible artists who have trusted me with their voices and allowed me to share their experiences with readers. Every conversation has been a reminder of just how much passion, creativity, and dedication goes into creating the magic we see on screen, and it’s an absolute honor to help preserve and celebrate these remarkable careers for generations of fans and filmmakers to come,” said Heather Wixson.
About MM&E: Volume 3:
Chucky. The Terminator. The Pale Man. Killer Klowns. Cenobites. Toxie. The creatures and characters that defined generations of genre storytelling didn’t just appear on the silver screen – they were sculpted, puppeteered, and brought to life by some of the most imaginative artists to ever work in Hollywood. Monsters, Makeup & Effects: Volume 3 continues celebrating these talents, shining a spotlight on another extraordinary group of innovators whose work has shaped the very DNA of modern fantasy, horror, and science fiction cinema.
In this third installment of her ongoing interview series, journalist and FX historian Heather Wixson dives deep once again into the lives and careers of 20 legendary artists whose contributions have forever influenced the landscape of practical effects. Through in-depth conversations paired with hundreds of rare behind-the-scenes photos, this third volume highlights the craftsmanship, ingenuity, and passion that fueled the creation of some of cinema’s most unforgettable imagery and characters.
From cutting-edge animatronics and creature design to groundbreaking makeup artistry and effects wizardry, Monsters, Makeup & Effects: Volume 3 celebrates the brilliant minds who brought the impossible to life for our entertainment.
